Moto2 is the intermediate class of Grand Prix motorcycle racing, between Moto3 and MotoGP. It has its own world championship and shares many race weekends with the other two categories. A common engine specification helps focus competition on riders, chassis development and the work of each team.

Moto2 riders take part in their own practice and qualifying sessions before racing in a separate Grand Prix. Their results and championship points belong to Moto2, even when the event is presented as part of a wider MotoGP weekend. The category has its own programme rather than a copy of every premier-class session.

The step up from lightweight racing places greater demands on braking, acceleration and tyre management. Consistent lap times can be just as important as a strong opening lap. Following a rider's qualifying position, early progress and late-race pace helps show where they are gaining an advantage over their rivals.
