Moto3 is the lightweight class of Grand Prix motorcycle racing and an important stage in the path towards Moto2 and MotoGP. Riders compete on small-capacity prototype motorcycles in a distinct world championship. The class is known for closely matched groups and battles that can involve several riders at once.

Each Moto3 event has its own practice, qualifying and Grand Prix sessions. These take place within the wider Grand Prix weekend, but the riders compete for their own results and points. Qualifying establishes the starting order, while race performance depends on how well riders make use of the group around them.

Slipstreaming and momentum can change positions quickly, especially on long straights. A rider leading one lap may choose a different position in the group on the next, and the final corners can decide a close finish. Watching the shape of the leading pack often reveals more than following one timing-screen position.
